An allergist is someone who basically knows how to control the allergies. Allergies are extremely common all around the world. From babies to children to even adults, everyone can be allergic to something. It does not necessarily have to be a food item, it can be a perfume, it can be a specific type of smell, it can be a room, it can be anything! Food allergies are mostly common as compared to other types of allergies such as seasonal allergies or eye allergies.
Every allergy is different from the rest. Some can cause serious problems and some cannot. You can easily control some but in some, you need to rush to the hospital. They can also become life threatening as well, for instance, eating a peanut if you are allergic to it and not having the right medication or being away from the hospital. You can get asthma because of allergies as well and that can be dangerous especially if it’s a young child. With these allergies, you can also get sinus where your nasal cavities get infected very badly.
An allergist is someone who basically knows how to control the allergies and what to do if someone has an allergic reaction. He’s a specialist of allergies in other words. His job is to identify the problems that trigger asthma or allergies. The allergist has the solution and the remedies to cure this. For instance, if someone had an eye allergy or pollen allergies in other words then the allergist would know that the child needs to have Antihistamine Eye Drops Ketotifen.
A person has to complete a 4-year degree program from any university in premedical in order to be an allergist. With those 4 years, the person has to do additional 4 years in a medical school with the focus on medications. In those 4 years, students get to learn everything related to the body such as the anatomy. They also get to learn about medical ethics and different medicines and what are they used for. An allergist is supposed to know medicines so they can help people who have an allergic reaction.
After these 4 years if the student wishes to get into the field of allergy then they need to do at least 2 years of study in allergy program. With this, they get a certificate from the American Board of Allergy and Immunology and this means that they are capable of judging what caused the allergy and what medicine to give to the patient.
There are different allergy medications that can be used to prevent allergies from happening or to cause more problem and the allergist job is to know all of them. Some of them include Antihistamines which basically end the allergic reaction and cause relieve but can make you drowsy so the allergist would know when to give this to a patient. Another is Corticosteroids which come in different forms such as a spray, cream and even in a tablet form. They reduce inflammation. Leukotriene inhibitors can also be used to reduce allergic reactions. They have to be taken every day regularly in order to prevent any sort of reaction from occurring. Decongestants are for nose reactions so they help to cure the nose in the allergy reaction. They constrict the blood vessels in the nose. Others include Cetirizine, Clemastine, Naphazoline, Pheniramine etc.
When it comes to diagnosing a particular type of allergy then the allergist takes a complete patient history which lets him or her know about the patients past, his or her symptoms, their work and home environment to get an idea what they are exposed to most of the time. Allergist usually performs different skin tests and do different tests just to get a clearer idea of the allergy.
A lot of research has proved that those patients who go to an allergist to get their treatment done are actually able to control their asthma problems and allergy problems. Thus it’s extremely important that if you have an allergy then you immediately go to an allergist.
